Robert Ernest Adams of Old Lyme, died on November 6, 2017. He was born July 15, 1930. He was the spouse of Shirley Hannafin Adams for 62 years. He was the son of the late Ernest C. and Blanche Adams. He graduated from Tabor Academy in Marion, MA in 1948 and Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH in 1952. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1952 and served in the 3rd Armored Division. He was employed for 29 years by Connecticut General Life Ins. Co. (now CIGNA) both in the Home Office and in San Francisco, the last position was Sales & Marketing Vice President for the Reinsurance Division from 1980-1983. For eleven years prior to retirement, he was President and CEO of Frankona America Life Reassurance Co, Kansas City, MO., a wholly owned subsidiary of Frankona Reassurance Corp. of Munich, Germany. He was active in the American Council of Life Insurance, the major Life Insurance Trade Association, chairing the Reinsurance Committee for three years. He retired in 1994 and moved to Old Lyme. CT. He was a member of the Old Lyme Country Club, and was active in tennis and golf. He served on the Board and in other operational capacities for ten years.
He leaves his spouse Shirley H. Adams, his son Robert E. Adams Jr. and wife Beth Beisecker of Burlingame, CA., his daughter Kathleen A. Adams-Joyce and husband John Joyce of Amherst, NH., and a granddaughter Katie Jane Adams of Burlingame, CA. He also leaves a niece Christine DiBattisto of Newington, CT and nephew John Hannafin of Shrewsbury, MA. He was predeceased by brother-in-law and sister-in-law William and Barbara Hannafin and nephew Brian Hannafin. The family wishes to thank Middlesex Hospital Hospice Home Care and Nurse Sarah Atwell
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday November 14, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John Catholic Church, 151 Main St. Old Saybrook, CT. There will be no calling hours and burial will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the Shoreline Soup Kitchens, P.O. Box 804 Essex, CT 06426 or a charity of the donor's choice.
