She was born to Francesco and Anita (Mascaro) Scalise, in Pianopoli, Catanzaro, Italy, Maria is survived by a large and loving family. As a young woman, Maria was trained as a seamstress. As an adult, Maria would draw on her training as a seamstress to make and hem the clothes of her children and make Halloween costumes for her grandchildren. With her brother Joseph, Maria emigrated from Italy in 1956 to join her father and brother Angelo in Hartford. In 1959, she returned to Italy to marry Raffaele Gramuglia, her husband of 58 years. Maria provided childcare through Catholic Family Services and belonged to the Ladies Guild of the St. Rose Church and is responsible for how good the fried dough tasted at the St. Rose Carnival. To say she will be missed is to define understatement. Maria created, touched, and shaped as many lives as she made meals or garments for her family.
