Shirley D. Collins, was born on May 26, 1936 in New Iberia, Louisiana, she was the daughter of the late Fredrick Henderson and Elnora Adams Henderson and the wife of the late Alfred Collins Sr. Shirley was educated and graduated from local school in New Iberia, Louisiana and came to Hartford in the early 60’s, where she was employed by Hartford Public Schools and retired after 26 years as a Food Service Coordinator. Shirley loved cooking as she was an authentic and knew every recipe for down home cooking. Shirley would often be found watching cooking shows and her all-time favorite, QVC. She was a member of Stella Chapter #16, Order of Eastern Star, Prince Hall Affiliate, ST of Ct. Shirley was a member of Phillips Metropolitan C.M.E. Church of Hartford, Ct. Shirley D. Collins, was married to Alfred Collins Sr. for 52 years. From that union they were blessed with 2 sons, Alfred Collins Jr. and his devoted wife Vija Denise of Manchester Ct, Jerome Collins of Norfolk, VA and a daughter Deborah Collins -Braithwaite (Wesley) of Hartford Ct., 9 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild . A special niece and nephew Mildred and Ellis Batiste, her longtime friend Gary B. Stanley, of Shallotte, NC. She is survived by one brother Adam Henderson of San Diego, California and predeceased by two sisters Delma Johnson, Elsie Batiste and one brother Savannah Henderson. A funeral service will be held at 10 AM Saturday, January 6 at the Phillips Metropolitan CME Church, 2500 Main St. Hartford, followed by burial in East Cemetery, Manchester. Her family will receive friends prior to the service on Saturday from 8 AM to 10 AM.
