Tribute & Message From The Family

After a courageous battle with cancer, Elliott Philip Shyer, 66, passed away at home on December 29, 2017, surrounded by loved ones. He leaves behind Nancy, his strong, lovely wife of 37 years; his daughter Emily (Shyer) Drago and son-in-law Justin Drago; his son Jonathan Shyer and daughter-in-law Kyleen Shyer; and grandchildren Finley and Declan Drago. He also leaves behind cousins Claudia Guy and Lori Alcorn and her husband BJ. Along with his parents, he is predeceased by his cousin David Guy. Born on May 30, 1951, Elliott was adopted by Hilda and Howard Shyer, who raised him with his sister Diane (Shyer) Lewis. He attended Norwich Free Academy and later, Bryant University, where he got the nickname “Ollie” and met closest friends and troublemakers Max Zaniewski, Vinny Aitoro, and Eric Nilsson, among others. He worked as a longtime sales rep for HeatTech, alongside his generous friend and boss, Tony Audia. Elliott had many passions and interests, extending far beyond losing his keys, having a chronically low battery on his phone, and forgetting any and every password ever created. He loved baseball dearly and was an avid Yankees fan and dedicated umpire (so dedicated that he called his own son out to prove that he wasn’t biased). He also loved biking; he enjoyed spinning classes at the YMCA, and participated in the Closer to Free Ride for six years, this year raising over $18,000 toward cancer care and research. He took pride in his community garden plot and loved “borrowing” Black Eyed Susans and rocks from various places to adorn his yard. His family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 3, from 5:00-8:00 p.m., at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St., Granby. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 4, 12 Noon, at the same location. The family will be hosting a luncheon following the memorial at their home in Granby and would love everyone to join them if they are able; Elliott's favorite foods will be served in his honor. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation in Elliott’s honor to any of these important causes: the Closer to Free Ride at Smilow Cancer Center at Yale New Haven Hospital or the Farmington Valley YMCA, Attn: LiveStrong Program, 97 Salmon Brook St., Granby, CT 06035. The family would like to thank all the friends, neighbors, Hartford Hospital Cancer Center staff (specifically Dr. Timothy Hong), the hospice care team, and countless others who have been there with us on this emotional journey. Elliott’s personality was large, quirky, filled with humor, and one-of-a-kind mannerisms and expressions. We would love to hear your Elliott stories because we all have them. If you would like to share your favorite story or memory with us, please email it to shyermemorial@gmail.com where they will be compiled, shared, and treasured. Photos are appreciated as well. Also, if you have seen his keys or phone charger, please let Nancy know.
